All ACFFC youth learn the traditional art/craft of papier mache. The littlest children watch, as they tear paper, then get to place it in layers over the mold, always supervised by their friends, our Teaching Artist and our Youth Papier Mache Team. By watching and by doing, they learn to paint the traditional designs that represent this special Haitian craft. They also take it further and create new forms and designs. Their pieces are owned by supporters in Haiti and abroad. They created, of papier mache, awards for the artist winners at the 2012 New Orleans Jazz Fest. They are at work creating pieces for the soon to open Jacmel Papier Mache Museum. Everyone participates. ACFFC youth have taught papier mache crafts to children in Leogane as well as in Jacmel.
They make birds, roosters, turtles, fish, butterflies, masks, bowls, and hanging lights/chandeliers. Come join in a class taught by our young people and take home a treasure.
