Silk Painting

Extending their love for use of color and making paintings, ACFFC youth paint walls, their hands, their own t-shirts and jeans, and now silk scarves, silk paintings and pillows. Painting on silk is a very precise skill set, and thanks to ACFFC Director of Operations, Dr. Connie Duke, we have a program in place. The concept is art = voice and also = business opportunities to come, as they grow from children to teens to young adults. It is all part of the model.

Our silk painters have their art shown and sold in monthly juried art walks. There are also five yearly art markets in the USA. In addition, they have their own Facebook page, The Someone Silk Project. They want to “be someone”, who feels confident in their craft and master the unique art of silk dye painting. Silk painting is many centuries old. Students have Master Silk Painter Mentors and are a part of Silk Painters International (SPIN).

This training, while complex, allows them the ability to provide for themselves and give them future careers as accomplished artists.

Our Future

We look forward to the day that our oldest youth will be self-reliant and successful, using the skills and lessons they learned at the ACFFC. Our hope is that they will continue to foster their sense of community with the ACFFC long after they are no longer youth in the program. Our young adults are, and will continue to be, role models for the younger children and teenagers.

Our Past

ACFFC was founded in 1999 as a small, informal “art day” program, and was formally established as an organization in 2003. We began as a three day a week program with eight children in a rickety building, run by volunteer artists and administration. We started out with only $500 USD.
